Module 8

The two videos that I chose to watch is Florence: Heart of the Renaissance and Understanding Art: Baroque Part 1 I mostly chose the renaissance video because everyone has basic knowledge on the renaissance period, that's the one that I know the most information on and I chose baroque because I barely have any knowledge on the topic.

The Renaissance began in 1400 in Florence

People are sculpted nude, this celebrates the human body more and more.

Donatello invented the Renaissance style of art, Michelangelo would come next and perfect what he started.

   - Art was a combination of appreciation for the human body, usually still with a religious reason, creating detailed and realistic "holy scenes"

- The city was very wealthy being the center of much trade, and many used this wealth to commission art for religion and pleasure

Understanding Art: Baroque Part 1

"Rome is basically a Baroque creation", the main architecture there is Baroque in style

       - The Cornaro Chapel in Santa Maria della Vittoria is considered by many to be Bernini's masterpiece, including by Bernini himself

-"Whatever it took, whatever it cost, the Baroque was up for it" is a good way to describe this movement

-There had been ceiling paintings in Italian art for centuries, however the Baroque had an extra focus on it due to the advancements art and the spending around it had seen

3- Both showed that they wanted their paintings and art to persuade followers to be more intune with their religion.
4-The video was a perfect length. Not too long and just enough information to get their point across.

Module # 7

The 2 religions that I chose were Christianity and Islam.
The similarities that I found in Islam ad christianity is the time that they take to ensure that their place of worship is a beautiful place.
I chose Christianity and Islam because they can relate in many ways. And I already had a basic understanding on Christianity because I follow it so I wanted to further my knowledge on Islamic Religion and compare my new found knowledge to each other.
I enjoyed watching both films

Islam
Various significant Islamic mosques were examined. This video started out by describing the first great masterpiece of Islamic art built in the seventh century, the Dome of the Rock. The Great Mosque of Kairouan has a amount of columns in the prayer room and it is remarkable. It was said that the intended propose of these series of columns was to create a sort of forest to block the view between those who pray and the imam. It was also dim, faintly light by countless chandeliers, in the prayer hall to help people focus on their prayers. In Islam, the relationship between people who pray and god is direct.

Christianity

In Christianity, so many events take place in the churches-- births, marriages, services, funerals, and more. I learned that a lot of these churches were created over time with a variety of inspiration and contributions. For example, the San Vitale church brought together cultural traditions of Greece and Rome. Something that I found interesting was the decor of the Durham Cathedral was described as "Romanesque". This was known as the first church in the world that had pointed arches at the top, inspiring many others.

Module 6

The three videos helped to further my understanding by adding depth and explaining the background of where influences came from for art. Hearing the background of art and then seeing it tied it all together.

Beyond the Classical: Byzantine and Later Greek Art

This video gave information on Greek history. The church had a big impact on greek history because Greece is a very Religious country.

The war of independence led to the next development of greek art. All events were documented and it Gave the greeks a sense of nationhood. Greeks were able to document things from their everyday life and turn it into paintings.

The Greek Awakening: Art from the 5th Century BC

Symbolism was a major factor, the building symbolized the emergence of Western Civilization. The building that they speak about is Parthenon. The building gets millions of tourist a year. Pollution is a big part of Parthenon.

The Measure of All Things: Greek Art and the Human Figure

Artist was obsessed with the human body and it became evident in their artwork.
"Man is the measure of all things" is a key phrase. Portrays humanism in the Greek culture and their art reflects all specs of the body.

Module 5

Elizabeth C. Tower (1920-2013), Birmingham, 1963; oil on canvas, 25 x 37 inches (Frame: 25 x 37 inches); Gift of Liz and Peter Tower, 2006
Which artwork made an impact or impression on me: This artwork made an impression on me because it looks like 2 sibling maybe laying out doing their homework. Eventhough Segregation had kinda ended around that time it didn't fully go into affect until 1970. Making it seem as if they may have still been in that time frame. Laying out with a book trying to educate themselves the best way that they can.

Allan M. D'Arcangelo (1930-1998), Constellation #8, 1970; acrylic on canvas, 84 x 84 inches (Frame: 84 x 84 inches); Purchased with funds from the National Endowment for the Arts and Friends of the Center, 1976
Which artwork made an impact or impression on me : This artwork made an impact on me because even though the image is in black and white. The way that the figures are shaping in different directions it can be interpreted in different ways. To me it kind of looks like a snowflake.

Artist Unknown , Untitled View of Niagara Falls, before 1889; oil on canvas, 12 ¾ x 14 7/8 inches; Burchfield Penney Art Center, Bequest of Norman E. Mack, II

Why Do I Feel a connection: The waterfall represents peace and serenity. When I think of the waterfall I think of and endless amount of opportunities. The connection to the waterfall is that life will keep going on.

Charles Cary Rumsey (1879-1922), Dancing Female, 1910; bronze, 10 x 3 x 6 inches; Mary A.H. Rumsey Bequest, 1991

Why do I feel A connection: This is a statue of a Dancing Lady. I feel a connection towards the lady because I danced too at one point of my life. And when your'e dancing you feel care free and I believe that's what this lady is feeling in this picture not only because she is dancing but also because she looks as if she is in the nude.

Charles Cary Rumsey (1879-1922), Mother with Children Sketch, undated; bronze, cast by Valsuani, 7 ½ x 3 ¼ x 2 ¾ inches; Gift of Mrs. Charles C. Rumsey, 2007

I would like to know more about this statue because it looks as if the kids are pulling down the mother. I wonder what the artist intended when creating this statue.

Charles Cary Rumsey (1879-1922), Buffalo and Calf, 1914; bronze, 9 x 23 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches; Gift of the Rumsey Family, 1991

I would Like to know more about this piece of art because I don't know why the calf is following the buffalo I don't know if it is suppose to represent something.

The most important fact that I learned from in the videos is how people are depicted in artwork. Usually when creating humans we are made as statues. there is less of a chance of seeing a human statue that looks realistic. (Made of Wax)

Our Modern world is dominated by unrealistic of human beings. What I liked most about the video is when it spoke about how the Egyptians was obsessed with unrealistic human bodies.

Value scale and color wheel

\
1~I've never created a value scale before but I Do remember creating a color wheel so that brought back some childhood memories.
2~I enjoyed working with the color wheel the most because although iv'e made one we didn't use magenta we used yellow red and blue.
3~The most important thing that I learned from these videos is that
red and blue are too dark to be primary.
4~The most important things that I learned is that the first set of colors that were suppose to be primary becomes brown when mixed all together. And that different pencils do different things. I found the videos to be very educational.

Color perception

1~
Color may affect our perception of the things around us. Like from a young age the color my mother related the color red with "whores". But the color white is associate with "purity". The way we see colors and they affect our emotion stems from our childhood. Either we are taught from our parents or from elementary style books.

2~
One thing that stuck out to me is how light can change our internal clock. The photosensitive ganglion plays a vital role in regulating our body clock. The photosensitive ganglion sends a signal to the brain telling it to wake up. Different colors also awake different emotions in our bodies. This stuck out to me because I always wondered why the color white makes me feel so serene.

3~
The concept the made the biggest impression on me in regards to colors is how Meghan is color blind. And I have a friend that is also colorblind and I've always wondered what it would be like to see no color. I often ask him how it feels to not see like everyone else and he says he can't miss something was never there.

Module 2

1.
Aesthetics Philosophy of the Art: Aesthetics is the philosophical study of art and beauty. Art leads from the dark and into the light. The 20th century saw an explosion of interest in aesthetics. The notion of art itself was always a major argument. The first half of the century the dominant view was known as the expression theory of art Tolstoy was the biggest supporter of this theory. He advocated for the philosophy of art whilst Collingwood formulated it later on.

CARTA: Evolutionary Origins of Art and Aesthetics: Neurobiology, Neurology and Art and Aesthetics: In this video key concepts that were presented was how we develop our perception of art and aesthetics. That was shown through neurobiology.

CNN Article: Our brain can interpret everything that we see preliminary marks everyday marks that we experience. Also artist have found ways to manipulate depth

2.The philosopher theory that I find most important is R.G. collington on aesthetics. The theory was formulated in 1938. The expression theory states that art is the expression of emotion.

3. I have never looked into the scientific aspect of art. The lecture shows that art and science although different subjects can be connected in a way.The most interesting fact that I took away from the lecture is that art is created to exaggerate to be pleasing to the human mind.

4.They relate to each-other by each describing the aesthetics of art in some way .

5.The films and article helped me deepen my understanding on aesthetics and I am a visual learner so the videos helped me to process it more.

Module 15

When I signed up for an online art class my first thoughts were" How do you take and art class online." I actually enjoyed myself ...
